The art of creating with what nature gives
ver video

Artisan creator of the pedal loom

Ernesto and his wife own a wonderful pedal loom in a town in the state of Oaxaca. They are in charge of the entire process involved in the manufacture of rugs and blankets.

Since they receive the freshly shorn virgin wool from the sheep, they card and spin it using an old wooden spinning wheel, creating skeins that they wash and then dye with natural dyes that they themselves collect from nature.

Until they begin to weave rugs and blankets on the pedal loom, loaded with Zapotec symbols, an indigenous people of the area, with which they tell us stories of their daily lives.

Weaving on a loom is like a dance, just as a dance is created, a piece is created. Ernesto

This is how you make the pieces

Warp and weft creating unique pieces.

When they receive the freshly shorn virgin wool, Ernesto and his wife put it in large vats where they disinfect and wash it in the traditional way.

Once the wool is dry, it is carded and spun on an old wooden spinning wheel, completely manually.

The magnificent sample of natural pigments that they themselves collect from nature, and the good knowledge of how each of them pigments depending on the other components they are mixed with, as if it were an ancestral recipe, allows them to have a very special and brilliant color.

When the skeins of spun wool are pigmented and dry, they choose the colours they will work with on the pedal loom, weaving warp and weft together and creating wonderful pieces.
