New generation Huichol art

Artisan creator of Huichol art

Alejandra comes from a Huichol family from the state of Nayarit where her father works in a very traditional way with this art. She learned as a child and as she matured, her interest in innovating with different pieces and designs grew.

She alone uses four techniques in a single piece: beads, yarn, spun beads and jewelry.

In each piece she makes, she tries to thank the gods for the knowledge that has been passed down from generation to generation and that somehow reached her. Now she feels very proud of being able to pass it on to her children one day.

When I watched my dad work, I loved playing with beads. Alexandra

A mix of different traditions and cultures.

Huichol art consists of covering objects of all kinds with beads and yarn. It is an ancestral technique, originating from the Huichol ethnic group, which is loaded with cosmic symbolism, which is one of their greatest beliefs.

The objects to be decorated are impregnated with beeswax, so these pieces should not be exposed to heat. Although today other methods have been developed to make the pieces more durable.

Once the beeswax has covered and attached itself to the object to be decorated, the yarn thread or tiny beads begin to be embedded, creating drawings and shapes that are totally symbolic for the Huichol people.

If the objects have not been decorated in the traditional way with beeswax, a paste is used that dries as glue. Therefore, the last step is to let the piece dry.
